July 30, 2013

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Atlanta Braves have announced the purchase of outfielder Todd Cunningham from Triple-A Gwinnett, effective on Tuesday, July 30. Cunningham will join the Braves' 25-man roster as a replacement for outfielder Reed Johnson, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left Achilles tendinitis.

The 24-year old Cunningham is set to make his Major League debut with Atlanta after playing 99 games with the Gwinnett Braves this season. The switch-hitting outfielder was impressive in his first Triple-A campaign, hitting .279 (100-for-358) with 12 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 30 RBIs. Cunningham led the G-Braves in triples, stolen bases (18) and runs scored (54), and ranked second on the club in hits (100) and on-base percentage (.357).

The Jacksonville, AL native was named the Atlanta Braves Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 after a solid season with the Double-A Mississippi Braves. In 120 games, he hit .309 (144-for-466) with 23 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 51 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. He finished the year as a Southern League mid-season and post-season All-Star.

Cunningham was originally drafted in the second round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves out of Jacksonville State University. Spanning four seasons and 375 minor league games, he batted .280 (392-for-1400) with 56 doubles, 18 triples, 10 homers, 125 RBIs and 64 stolen bases.

With the purchase of Cunningham, all three Opening Day outfielders for the Gwinnett Braves are now on Atlanta's active roster. Joey Terdoslavich was purchased by the Braves on July 4, and Jose Constanza was recalled on July 13.

The Gwinnett Braves are off on Tuesday before opening a three-game series against the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday at Coolray Field. Gwinnett will start right-hander Cody Martin (2-2, 3.26), while Charlotte will counter with right-hander Andre Rienzo (8-6, 4.06). Tony Schiavone will have the call on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.   First pitch is set for 6:05 PM.
