August 1, 2013

(Portland, Maine) - The Boston Red Sox have promoted left-handed pitcher Henry Owens to the Portland Sea Dogs from Single-A Salem. Right-handed pitcher Mike McCarthy was transferred to Single-A Salem to make room for Owens. Owens will wear uniform # 39.

Owens has notched an 8-5 record with a 2.92 ERA in 20 starts with the Salem Red Sox this season. He has struck out a Carolina League and Red Sox minor league organization leading 123 strikeouts in 104.2 innings pitched. The 21 year-old tossed the first six innings, striking out ten, in a combined no-hitter on July 17th against Frederick. The Carolina League All-Star put together a remarkable streak tossing 19.1 consecutive innings without allowing a hit from July 11th through July 28th. He was selected as the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 15-21, 2013.

Baseball America rates Owens as the fifth best prospect in the organization and as having the "Best Changeup" in the system. In his first professional season in 2012, he posted a 12-5 record with a 4.87 ERA. Owens was the Red Sox third pick (sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds, 36th overall) in the June 2011 draft.
