Hot Rods Use Crazy Comeback to Defeat South Bend

Gantt leads the way with four hits in 9-8 win
August 6, 2013

Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (66-47, 28-17) used an eight-run sixth inning to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks (70-44, 26-19) 9-8 on a wild Tuesday night in downtown Bowling Green. Marty Gantt led the way for the Hot Rods at the plate with four hits, including the go-ahead two-run single to cap the biggest sixth inning in franchise history.

South Bend, in search of their eighth win in as many tries at Bowling Green Ballpark in 2013, built up a five-run advantage and led 5-0 at the halfway mark. Tyler Goeddel got the Hot Rods on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Silver Hawks immediately added two more runs in the top of the sixth.

That set the Hot Rods up for an epic comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trailing 7-1 entering the frame, Bowling Green brought 13 men to the plate and scored eight times. The scoring started when the bases were cleared on a Patrick Leonard double to bring the Hot Rods to within three runs. Three of the next five hitters walked, including Justin O'Conner's two out walk to trim the Silver Hawk lead to 7-5.

Leonardo Reginatto then doubled in two more runs to tie the score 7-7. Two batters later and with the bases again loaded, Gantt connected for his second hit of the inning to drive in two runs to give the Hot Rods their first lead since the ninth inning on Monday.

Despite South Bend drawing closer with a run in the top of the seventh inning, the Hot Rods were able to hold on for the dramatic, come-from-behind victory, which is their first at home against South Bend in 2013.

The nine-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark continues Wednesday at 7:05 PM CDT as the Hot Rods begin a three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers). Bowling Green will give the pearl to RHP Reinaldo Lopez (7-4, 2.29) opposite Great Lakes' RHP Chris Anderson (2-0, 1.67). Join Chris Kleinhans-Schulz and Hank Fuerst on the call on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 "The Ticket" WBGN-AM and 1340wbgn.com). The Forever Communications Pregame Show begins at 6:35 PM CDT.
