Perez, who played four innings at second base and finished 1-for-2 with a strikeout, also participated in the Home Run Derby prior to Tuesday's contest. DID YOU KNOW? Barnese appears to have found his groove, allowing just four earned runs in his last 22 innings and recording a strikeout/walk ratio of 16-3. A native of Simi Valley, Calif., he was a third-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2007 Draft. He was lured away from a commitment to Cal State-Fullerton. What the Rays hope to see in the SAL from the 20-year-old this season is additional development of a changeup to go with a competent fastball and curve. Barnese showed confidence and the ability to pitch inside at Hudson Valley last summer, putting together a 5-3 record, a 2.45 ERA and a strikeout/walk ratio of 84-24 in 13 starts while allowing just one home run in 66 innings.

The Charleston roster underwent several changes as ambidextrous closer Pat Venditti (the SAL saves leader with 20), DH Dan Brewer (.323), IF David Adams (.290) and RHP Hector Noesi (3-4, 2.38) were promoted to Class A Advanced Tampa. The RiverDogs received Baldridge and IF Garrison Lassiter.
DID YOU KNOW? With Noesi's promotion, Charleston is a bit short on starting pitching. There has been a lot of movement among pitchers in the Yankees system over the past 10 days, so look for a hurler or two to come the RiverDogs' way soon. LHP Jeremy Bleich -- 6-4, 3.40 in 14 starts at Tampa -- was placed on the Charleston roster but is now scheduled to start for Double-A Trenton on Tuesday in Erie. In Charleston, the burden falls to Phelps and Banuelos to lead the staff.

NEWS & NOTES: The Shorebirds lost two key members of their bullpen as RHPs Pat Egan and Eddie Gamboa, who accounted for eight first-half wins, were promoted to Class A Advanced Frederick. The Shorebirds received RHPs Chris Flagello and Andrew Barb and LHP Chris Salberg from the Keys. Barb was the most effective of the trio in the Carolina League, putting together a 3.93 ERA in 19 games.
DID YOU KNOW? Barb, 24, is not a newcomer to the SAL, having been a key member of Lakewood's 2006 bullpen with a 6-0, 0.76 mark in 19 home games for the BlueClaws en route to a 6-2, 2.23 mark with 18 saves. He was traded to Seattle in August of that year and registered 10 saves and a 3-1, 2.33 record for Class A Wisconsin of the Midwest League before an elbow injury sidelined him for the '08 season. He also had knee surgery along the way and was selected by Baltimore in the Minor League portion of the 2008 Rule 5 Draft. The Orioles obviously hope he can regain his past form.

NEWS & NOTES: The Grasshoppers bullpen, a strong point all season, may have become even more formidable with the addition of RHP Jhan Marinez, who arrives from Class A Advanced Jupiter with a 3.68 ERA in 11 relief appearances while holding Florida State League batters to a .122 average. Greensboro also received 1B Robert Taylor from Jamestown of the New York-Penn League.
DID YOU KNOW? Marinez, a native of Santo Domingo, D.R., was signed as a free agent by Florida in 2006. The 20-year-old spent the last two seasons in the Gulf Coast League and had his most consistent run in the FSL recently. NEWS & NOTES: The first-half SAL champion Drive sent a few key players up the ladder of the Boston system to Class A Advanced Salem last week, led by C Tim Federowicz, the SAL's batting leader at .345 (78-for-226). 1B Anthony Rizzo and OF David Mailman also punched their tickets to the Carolina League. ... Greenville received some help from Salem in OF Jered Stanley, C Tyler Weeden and IF Jonathan Hee. All but Hee previously played for Greenville, with Stanley batting .270 (77-for-285) with 17 homers and 54 RBIs. He batted just .223 (25-for-112) for Salem and will attempt to get his bat back in rhythm with the Drive. ... OF David Marks was placed on the disabled list.
DID YOU KNOW? Weeden finds himself on the rebound with the Drive after hitting .200 (12-for-60) at Salem. Injuries have affected the native of Edmund, Okla., who was a 16th-round selection by Boston in 2006. NEWS & NOTES: The Suns added a familiar face in OF Valerio Heredia last week. The native of Barahona, D.R., returns to the Suns after a 65-game stint in 2008 during which he batted .225 (47-for-209). He was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs in 2004, reached Peoria of the Midwest League in 2007 and played in just five games before returning to the Dominican Summer League. Not a player with much power, he contributes with speed on defense and on the bases, registering 28 thefts in 36 attempts in 2008.

When the club relocated to Hickory in 1993, Haas moved with it and was named director of stadium operations. He was named general manager in 1997 and held that position through the 2007 season. This is his first taste of full-season ball, and last week marked his best stretch since his signing. WHO'S HOT: RHP Brian Rosenberg (5-2, 1.50) has a strikeout/walk ratio of 39-9 and has registered 11 saves in 13 chances. ... DID YOU KNOW? Simunic had his best stretch of the season in his last 10 games. He is a native of Bloomington, Ind., who was drafted in the 17th round by Houston out of the University of Tennessee. The fact he is beginning to string together hits has Astros observers smiling because his defense -- just two errors in 27 starts this season -- has always been there. He hit just .234 (43-for-184) at Tri-City of the New York-Penn League, but was named that club's Defensive Player of the Month for July. Simunic could improve his standing by hitting southpaws at a better clip. Batting .313 (21-for-67) vs. right-handers, he is just 3-for-21 (.143) against lefties.

His brother, Tim, is an outfielder in the Phillies system at Class A Advanced Clearwater and is having a strong season, batting .304 with 37 RBIs in the Florida State League. What excites the Braves is his plus throwing arm, which erased 57 percent of base runners who tried to steal against him last season. He has bat speed, but still needs to learn plate discipline. He will share time behind the plate with Braeden Schlehuber, who entered the season as Atlanta's top catching prospect, with Kennelly second. Schlehuber has not hit, while Sucre has put himself firmly in the picture.
