Angels Peter Bourjos and Jason Vargas to Rehab with Bees

Recent Angels signee Dontrelle Willis also to join Bees.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that outfielder Peter Bourjos and starting pitcher Jason Vargas will begin rehab assignments with the Bees in tonight's game at Round Rock. In addition, the Angels have signed two-time MLB All-Star Dontrelle Willis to a minor league contract and assigned him to Salt Lake. Bourjos, 26, was placed on the Disabled List on June 30 with a fractured right wrist. In 40 games with the Angels in 2013, he owns a .273 batting average with 43 hits, three doubles, two triples and three home runs. During a previous four-game rehab assignment with the Bees this season (June 6-10), Bourjos hit .214 with one home run, three RBI and three runs. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native was originally selected by the Angels in the 10th round of the 2005 Draft.

Vargas, 30, was placed on the Disabled List on June 18 with a blood clot in his left arm. In 14 games (all starts) for the Angels in 2013, he owns a 6-4 record with a 3.65 ERA and 62 strikeouts. He is expected to start in tonight's game. The Apple Valley, Calif. native was originally selected by the Florida Marlins in the second round of the 2004 Draft and joined the Angels via trade from the Seattle Mariners for Kendrys Morales on December 19, 2012.

Willis, 31, joins the Bees after appearing in 14 games (all starts) for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League in 2013. He went 5-4 with a 2.57 ERA and 52 strikeouts. A veteran of nine major league seasons, Willis has appeared in 205 games (202 starts), owning a 72-69 record with a 4.17 ERA and 896 strikeouts (Florida Marlins - 162 games, Detroit Tigers - 24 games, Arizona Diamondbacks - six games, Cincinnati Reds - 13 games). Willis reached All-Star status in 2003 and 2005 while with Florida and was also the 2003 National League Rookie of the Year. His last major league appearance was on September 27, 2011 with Cincinnati in a 5-4 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Alameda, Calif. native was originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the eighth round of the 2000 Draft.

The Salt Lake Bees begin an eight-game road trip tonight against the Round Rock Express as the team works to maintain its lead of the Pacific North Division.
