Bullish bullpen highlights RedHawks 8-3 victory
Thomas Diamond was called on for a spot start after Derek Holland was promoted to the Texas Rangers 25-man roster earlier in the day. Diamond and Memphis starter Blake Hawksworth matched zeros on the scoreboard over the first two innings before a heavy rain began to fall, forcing a delay of one hour and six minutes.
Oklahoma City notched a pair of runs in the third inning when the game resumed. Hawksworth remained in the game after the delay and walked three straight batters, bringing home two runs in the process. Memphis halved the deficit with a run off of Kason Gabbard in the fourth. The RedHawks would tack on four more runs in the sixth, including two on a sacrifice fly by Joaquin Arias that scored Richardson from third and Julio Borbon from second. The final Oklahoma City runs came on Richardson's first home run of the year, and eighth inning shot off Memphis reliever Royce Ring. The Redbirds plated a pair off RedHawks reliever Pedro Strop to close the scoring.
Beau Vaughan (1-0) earned the win after taking over for Gabbard with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning. The right-hander, promoted back to Oklahoma City to replace Holland on the roster one day after being transferred to Frisco, pitched three and a third scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three. Hawksworth (1-1) took the loss by allowing two runs on four hits and five walks.
Greg Golson, Borbon, and Richardson had two hits apiece to lead the RedHawks to their first win at the Bick this season. Tyler Greene and Allen Craig had multi-hit games for the Redbirds.
Oklahoma City and Memphis meet Sunday afternoon at 4:05 pm for the third game of this four game set. Luis Mendoza (1-0) is scheduled to pitch for the RedHawks against the Redbirds Clayton Mortensen (1-0).
