Cooney wins Texas League Pitcher of the Week
Springfield, MO - The Texas League announced on Monday that Springfield Cardinals All-Star LHP Tim Cooney has been named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 5 - 11. It marks the fourth time that a Cardinal has won a weekly award this season, with All-Star 3B Ruben Gotay claiming the Player of the Week award for June 17 - 23, All-Star LF Mike O'Neill for April 22 - 28 and 1B Xavier Scruggs for April 29 - May 5.
Cooney, 23, helped the Cardinals post a 5-1 record through six games on the week, dominating the Frisco RoughRiders in his one outing. After a first-inning solo home run, Cooney retired 22 of the next 25 batters he faced, finishing with a career-high 10 strikeouts through a season-high eight innings. He allowed just the one run with only five hits, while not issuing a single walk.
The Collegeville, Pennsylvania native has posted a 6-7 record with a 4.05 ERA through 16 starts with Springfield. In 91.0 total innings, he has racked up 98 strikeouts with only 15 walks allowed. He started the campaign with the Palm Beach Cardinals (High-A), going 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA through six starts before being promoted to Springfield on May 13.
In his first full professional season, Cooney was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2012 June Draft out of Wake Forest University.
