Ernie Whitt brings Canadians luck on Wednesday

August 14, 2013

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - The Vancouver Canadians were firing on all cylinders Wednesday night at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium, as they pounded out 15 hits and gave up only three en route to a convincing 10-1 victory over the Everett AquaSox.

After the Aquasox got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from 1B Kyle Petty, Vancouver countered with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame. AquaSox starter LHP Nate Koneski allowed the first three runners he faced to reach base, and they all came around to score on an RBI groundout and RBI singles from 1B Justin Atkinson and RF Melvin Garcia.

The Canadians then took advantage of some poor Everett defence in the second to increase their lead, scoring one on a throwing error and another on an RBI single by 2B Andy Fermin. C Michael Reeves made it a five-run game the following inning when he hit a solo home run, his first of the season.

DH L.B. Dantzler put an exclamation point on the game with his league-leading eighth home run of the season that 'Slugged the Mug' out in right-centre field, sending fans home with a free A&W Teen Burger and root beer. The C's then reached double-digits in the seventh inning when PH Shaun Valeriote recorded a two-run single, his first hit in a Canadians uniform.

The runs proved to be more than enough support for C's starter RHP Tom Robson, as he settled down after the first inning to pitch five innings and allow just the one run on two hits to record the win. The bullpen followed suit, as RHP Justin James and RHP Brandon Dorsett combined to go the final four innings and finish off the dominant pitching performance.

With the win, Vancouver moves to 9-11 (.450) in the second half of the 2013 Northwest League season and 31-27 (.534) overall, while Everett falls to 10-10 (.500) and 32-26 (.552).

The finale of this three-game series is a Power Smart 'Nooner, and it starts at 1:05pm. Tickets to that game are sold out, but seats are still available for the five-game home stand against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, minus the Saturday game. Tickets can be purchased by calling 604.872.5232 or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street.
