August 16, 2013

Salisbury, MD - Delmarva Shorebirds (21-33) starting pitcher Parker Bridwell struck out a career high 14 batters to lead the Shorebirds to a 2-0 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws (20-34) on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The 14 strikeouts are the most by a Shorebirds pitcher since the 2000 season when Erik Bedard fanned 14 Hickory Crawdads on May 26, 2000.

The Shorebirds plated an early run in the first inning. Gregory Lorenzo pulled a double to left field. Then, Anthony Caronia singled into center field to give the Shorebirds an early 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds added a run. Nik Balog reached on a walk and later scored on a double to left field by Lorenzo.

Bridwell worked eight innings, which matches his career long outing, and yielded just two hits and no runs. He fanned seven batters in a row during a stretch between the first and third innings and retired eight of the first ten hitters by strikeout. Bridwell did not issue a walk.

Mychal Givens entered in the ninth inning and retired the 'Claws in order to end the game. He struck out two batters.

Gregory Lorenzo and Joel Hutter each recorded two hits.

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Saturday, August 17 at 7:05pm. LHP Bennett Parry is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
