Gabryszwski dazzles in Canadians victory
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - With his family in from rural Texas for the weekend, Canadians RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (gab-ah-RISK-key) was nearly untouchable on Saturday night going six strong innings on the mound to help Vancouver to a 6-1 victory over the Volcanoes. The win helped the Canadians move to within just a pair of games of division leading Spokane with 15 games remaining in the regular season.
The Canadians got out to an early lead in the contest, taking advantage of some poor Salem-Keizer defence to get on the board in the first inning. After SS Dawel Lugo reached first on a throwing error by Volcanoes starter RHP Jake Smith, he moved to second on a walk and proceeded to come home on an RBI single from RF Brenden Kalfus. The lead was pushed to two in the next inning when Lugo hit an RBI single of his own.
Vancouver then led off the fifth inning with three straight singles off of LHP Steven Reff, setting the tone for a two run inning that put the Canadians up 4-0. C Mike Reeves hit a sacrifice fly that scored 1B L.B. Dantzler, while 2B Andy Fermin tallied on a bases-loaded walk.
After Salem-Keizer got a run back in the seventh inning on a solo home run from RF Tyler Horan, the C's responded with two more runs of their own. With the bases loaded following three walks, OF Chaz Frank hit a single that score two runners to make it 6-1.
C's starter RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski didn't need much run support, as he allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season. RHP Garrett Pickens came on to pitch the seventh, giving up just the home run, while LHP Alonzo Gonzalez went the final two innings to close out the victory.
With the win, Vancouver moves to 10-13 (.435) in the second half of the 2013 Northwest League season and 32-29 (.533) overall, while Salem-Keizer falls to 15-8 (.652) and 38-23 (.623).
Game three of this five-game home series goes tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm, as the C's send LHP Colton Turner to the mound, while the Volcanoes counter with RHP Chase Johnson.
