This is going to be fun! C's one game back in North
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - A resilient Canadians offense broke through late to top the visiting Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on Monday night to move to within a lone game of top spot in the Northwest League's North Division with just 13 games remaining in the regular season. Monday's 8-4 victory helped Vancouver as both Spokane and Everett fell to start off the week.
It didn't take long for the Canadians to get to Volcanoes starter RHP Pat Young, as they used two-out hits in the first and second inning to take an early lead. CF Chaz Frank led off the first inning with a walk, and after he stole second base he came home on a single by DH Andy Fermin. Frank then made it 2-0 in the second when he hit an RBI single that scored RF Melvin Garcia.
Salem-Keizer got a run back in the third inning off of RHP Tom Robson when 1B Bryan Ragira hit a double off the wall that scored SS Jeremy Sy, but Vancouver got that run back in the fifth to restore the two-run cushion. After two singles and a walk to start the inning, Fermin drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Frank.
The C's bullpen appeared to let another game slip away, as the Volcanoes tallied twice in the seventh inning off of LHP Scott Silverstein to tie it up at three. Vancouver used some sound defence to limit the damage to just two runs, but one run still scored on an RBI single off the bat of C Ty Ross and another came around on an RBI groundout.
Vancouver showed some fight in the bottom of that frame, storming back with three more runs to take back the lead. With two outs and the bases loaded 1B L.B. Dantzler came home on a wild pitch to put the C's up one, and a single by Garcia scored a pair and made it 6-3.
Salem-Keizer added a run in the eighth to close the gap, but Vancouver scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning on two wild pitches to push their lead to four. RHP Chuck Ghysels pitched the final inning, keeping the Volcanoes off the board to secure the win.
With the win, Vancouver moves to 11-14 (.444) in the second half of the 2013 Northwest League season and 33-30 (.523) overall, while Salem-Keizer falls to 16-9 (.640) and 39-24 (.619).
The finale of this five-game home series goes tomorrow night at 7:05pm, as the C's send LHP Kyle Anderson to the mound, while the Volcanoes counter with RHP Chris Johnson.
