Bees Beat Chiefs 5-3 in 13 Innings

August 22, 2013

The Burlington Bees scored two runs in the 13th inning and knocked off the Peoria Chiefs 5-3 in 13 innings on Thursday night at Dozer Park.

Burlington (50-74, 24-35) held the lead on three different occasions on Thursday, but no lead was more important than the one the Bees took in the 13th to win the game. Chevy Clarke led off the inning with a double off Joe Scanio. Scanio (3-4) hit Garrett Cannizaro, prompting Riley Good to come in and run for him. After Pedro Toribio struck out trying to bunt, Sherman Johnson dropped a single into left field to load the bases. Angel Rosa sent a ground ball to first base that went off the glove of Jeremy Schaffer for an error and brought Clarke home. Exicardo Cayones was hit by a pitch and Good came in for the second run of the frame. Wade Hinkle, who finished 5-for-7, grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Alex Blackford (S, 1) twirled a perfect bottom of the 13th with two strikeouts for his first save in a Bees uniform.

The Bees took an early 2-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and the second innings. Rosa scored on Hinkle's single in the first and Zach Wright came home on Cannizaro's double in the second. Brad Watson surrendered two runs in 5.2 innings, but was left with the no-decision.

Peoria (66-60, 28-31) tied the game in the second off of Brandon Love. Breyvic Valera led off the inning with an infield single and scored on a double by the next batter, Juan Herrera. Herrera then scored on Ildemaro Vargas' single. Love hurled six innings of two-run ball, striking out seven batters.

In the seventh, the two teams exchanged runs against relievers. Toribio led off the inning with a single off of Jay Voss and after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Toribio scored on Rosa's single. Joey Krehbiel allowed an unearned run in his inning of work. Vargas singled to start the frame and moved to second when Krehbiel threw a pickof attempt into the stands. Vargas scored on a single by C.J. McElroy Jr.

Austin Adams (2-1) hit a batter and threw a wild pitch in the 12th inning, but he was able to keep the Chiefs off the board and earn his second win of the season.

Burlington ends a four-game losing streak and will take on Peoria in the rubber match of the series on Friday night. Chris O'Grady will take on Mike Mayers at 6:30 p.m.
