Bats Get Two In Seventh, Beat Yankees 3-2

May 9, 2009
Louisville, KY- On a beautiful day at Louisville Slugger Field, the Louisville Bats faced the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in game two of the four-game series. In front of a crowd of 10,716 the Bats downed the Yankees, 3-2.

The Yankees continued their hot hitting early in the game as they scored two in the top of the third. With one out and a runner at third, Doug Bernier singled to left field, sending Luis Nunez home and putting the Yankees on the board. Bernier later scored on a Todd Linden double giving the Yanks the 2-0.

The Bats tried to retaliate but couldn't get on the board. From the third to the fifth inning, the Bats stranded a runner at third. They were however able to get one across in the fifth as Wilkin Castillo delivered a bunt single down the first baseline. He later scored on a single up the middle by Norris Hopper.

The Bats were not done yet. In the seventh inning Hopper delivered his second single of the night and once again scored Castillo, tying the game. The Bats took the lead when Danny Richar scored on a Drew Stubbs double.

Once again the Bats' bullpen was stellar as they held the Yankees scoreless in three innings of work. Pedro Viola (2-0, 0.73) picked up the win, going two innings and striking out three. He did not allow a runner to reach base. Robert Manuel then closed it out in the ninth, allowing only one hit for his third save of the year.

Yankees' George Kontos (0-1, 5.06) took the loss. He pitched six-and-one-third innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, all earned, walking two and striking out seven.

The Bats will continue their four-game set against the Yankees on Mother's Day, May 10 at 1:15pm. RHP Ramon Ramirez (0-3, 7.13) will get the start for the Bats and LHP Kei Igawa (2-0, 5.53) is scheduled for Yankees.
