Olt Lifts Cubs Over Redbirds

August 24, 2013

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Cubs (61-74) used a five-run sixth inning and four hits by Mike Olt to cruise past the Memphis Redbirds (64-71) 8-5 on Saturday night at Principal Park. The series is tied 2-2 heading into Sunday afternoon's finale.

Olt went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and scored twice in his first four-hit game of the season. Olt got Iowa on the board with a solo blast in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1, and put the Cubs in front 2-1 after an RBI single in the fourth.

After the Redbirds regained the lead 3-2 with two runs in the fifth, Dave Sappelt evened the score for the Cubs once again with an RBI single to shallow right field in the same inning. Greg Rohan drew a pinch-hit walk to start the inning and Ty Wright doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position for Sappelt. Brad Nelson grounded into a unique 3-2-5-2 double play, with Wright called out trying to score from third, and Memphis was able to get out of the jam.

The Cubs broke a 3-3 tie with a huge sixth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and two walks. Olt doubled and scored the first run on a Tim Torres double, Ty Wright tallied a run with a sacrifice fly, and Sappelt and Nelson also notched RBI doubles in the inning to put the Cubs on top 8-3.

Cubs starter Casey Coleman allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, walked four and struck out four. Alberto Cabrera (1-3) and Chang-Yong Lim each tossed a scoreless inning of relief before Marcus Hatley finished the game. Hatley allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth but Iowa held on to get the victory.

Nick Greenwood (2-7) surrendered four runs - three earned - on seven hits over 5.1 innings and took the loss for Memphis.
