Santana Ends Rehab

Ortega placed on Disabled List with right elbow inflammation

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that right-handed pitcher Ervin Santana has completed his rehab assignment with the Bees and will return to the Angels lineup.

The club also reassigned right-handed pitcher Rafael Rodriguez to Triple-A Salt Lake. In addition, the Bees have placed right-handed pitcher Anthony Ortega on the Disabled List with right elbow inflammation.

Santana, 26, appeared in one game for the Bees in 2009, earning the win in five innings while holding batters to a .158 average. He also made a rehab appearance for the Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on May 4, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts.

The Dominican Republic native suffered a sprain right elbow in spring training and has yet to appear in a game for the Angels this season. He is scheduled to start for the Halos this afternoon against the Boston Red Sox.

Rodriguez, 24, has appeared in six games of relief for the Angels in 2009, collecting one save with a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings. He made his major league debut on April 15 at Seattle, allowing one hit in one inning of work.

He has appeared in two games out of the bullpen for the Bees this season, registering a 4.50 ERA with one save. The Dominican Republic native signed with the Angels as a free agent on July 20, 2001.

Ortega, 23, has appeared in four games (all starts) for the Bees in 2009, owning a 2-1 record with a 9.64 ERA. He has appeared in three games with the Angels this season, including his major league debut on April 25 against the Seattle Mariners. A native of Venezuela, Ortega was originally signed by the Angels as a nondrafted free agent on October 12, 2003.
