Howard signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958 out of Ohio State University and played in eight big league games that summer and nine more the following year. The native of Columbus, OH made the big leagues for good in 1960 when he batted .268 with 23 HR and 77 RBI in 117 games and was named the National League Rookie of the Year.
"Hondo" played for the Dodgers through 1964, winning a World Championship in 1963, before joining the Washington Senators for the 1965 season.
He enjoyed the best years of his career in the nation's capital, earning a spot on the American League All-Star team four straight years from 1968 through 1971. He led the AL in home runs twice, belting 44 in both 1968 and 1970, and finished second in the league with a career-high 48 long balls in 1969.
Howard moved with the Senators to Texas for the 1972 season, but finished that year with Detroit. He also played for the Tigers in 1973, his last year in the big leagues.
Over the course of 16 Major League seasons, Howard batted .273 with 382 home runs and 1,119 RBI in 1,895 games. Following his retirement, he managed the San Diego Padres and New York Mets and also served as a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, Mets, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
