Illegal bats found in Mexican League

Players fined after league discovers aluminum in some bats
July 14, 2009
The Mexican League has fined two unnamed players for using corked, aluminum-filled and hollowed bats this season, the league announced on Tuesday.

Each player was fined $25,000 pesos, roughly $1,800 US, in violation of league rules.

One player, currently on Laguna's roster, filled his bat with with 20cm of aluminum piping. The piping contained 13cm of cork.

A second player, currently with Monclova, was found to have drilled out the inside of the barrel, although no substances were discovered.

Both teams will receive the fines, determined by the Mexican League General Council. The club's executives must then pass on the punishment to the players responsible.

The league said it will "continue the review of bats with the firm purpose of maintaining fair play."

The Mexican League also made headlines in late April when, at the urging of the nation's government, the circuit suspended all activity due to concerns of swine flu.
