Clay Buchholz to start for PawSox on Friday, August 30

August 28, 2013

Friday night when the PawSox host Syracuse at 6:15 pm at McCoy Stadium they will trot a bon a fide Major League #1 starter to the hill as Clay Buchholz (9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 12 starts for Boston this season) will make a rehab start as he continues his comeback from a neck strain that has kept him on the disabled list and out of the Red Sox rotation since June 9.

Buchholz was 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 12 starts for Boston this season before going on the DL. He led Major League baseball with his 1.71 ERA and his 9 wins were tied with Arizona's Patrick Corbin for the ML lead at that time. Clay was just the second Red Sox pitcher all-time to have at least 9 wins and no losses in his first 12 starts of a season joining Roger Clemens (11-0 in 1986). He was also the first Boston pitcher to begin a season 9-0 since Josh Beckett in 2009.

Buchholz beat the Los Angeles Angels, 7-2 on June 8 at Fenway Park but left in the 7th-inning with neck tightness. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 18 (retroactive to June 9) and on August 19 was transferred to the 60-day DL. He has missed 70 games going into play Wednesday night but the Red Sox were 41-29 during that span. Clay is 55-32 with a 3.66 ERA in 119 games (117 starts) during his career with Boston. He has pitched for the PawSox in 2007, 2008 & 2009 and has made one rehab start for Pawtucket in both 2010 and 2012.
