P-Nats Hurler Blake Schwartz Receives Carolina League Pitcher of the Week Award
Woodbridge, VA-The Carolina League has announced Potomac Nationals RHP Blake Schwartz has been awarded the circuit's most recent Pitcher of the Week Award.
Schwartz, selected by the Washington Nationals in the 17th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft, gunned through nine shutout frames against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Kansas City Royals) on 8/24 and allowed just five hits. Schwartz walked none and fanned four hitters.
Despite taking a no decision in the start, the outstanding tossing performance garnered the Carolina League's co-leader in wins (11) the weekly hardware.
Schwartz, 23, has turned in a career campaign. Beginning the season with Class-A Hagerstown, the 6'3", 200 pound right-hander has served as the ace of Potomac's pitching staff in the second half. Schwartz has hurled to an anemic 2.56 earned run average, the lowest in the Potomac clubhouse, while leading the Nationals' stable in innings pitched (123.0) and WHIP (1.03).
Schwartz has only walked 24 men this season in the Carolina League while holding opposing hitters to a stingy .227 batting clip.
The Potomac Nationals have claimed eight weekly Carolina League awards in 2013, a total tied for most in the eight-team faction this season.
