July 17, 2009
PULASKI -- The Seattle Mariners have signed one of their 2009 Major League Draft first round picks and sent him to Pulaski to begin his career. Catcher Steve Baron was the team's third pick, in the compensation round.

He reported to Pulaski this week and has already seen action on the field.

Baron is considered one of the top catching prospects in the country. He played at John A. Ferguson School (Miami, Fla.), and was the supplemental pick for loss of free agent Raul Ibanez. This past season he batted .345 in 30 games and 113 appearances.

Baron, who was committed to Duke, will receive $200,000 for school and is guaranteed non-roster invitations to spring training in 2010 and 2011.

No other details of his contract have been released.
