Ciriaco's Career Night Pushes BayBears Past Lookouts
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Pedro Ciriaco drove home a career-high five runs and scored a pair as the BayBears held off the Chattanooga Lookouts 6-4 in the opener of their six-game set on Tuesday night at AT&T Field.
Ciriaco got started early against Steve Johnson (0-1) who was making his Double-A debut. After Chris Rahl was hit by a pitch to start the contest, Ciriaco tripled him home to put the BayBears (51-44, 14-11) on top by a run. Two batters later, Ricardo Sosa lifted a sac fly to center to score Ciriaco.
Chattanooga (42-52, 12-13) bounced back in the bottom of the first as Ramon Nivar reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a base hit by Josh Bell with two outs. Nivar tripled in the third and touched the dish after an Andrew Lambo sac fly to tie the score at 2-2.
Wes Roemer (6-5) surrendered nine hits in the contest but only three runs over five frames. He was given the lead for good in the fifth when Yunesky Sanchez reached on an error by Eddy Perez and took second on a walk to Evan Frey. With two away, Johnson was close to getting out of trouble but instead, he coughed up a three-run, tie-breaking jack to Ciriaco.
Ciriaco added another RBI in the sixth as his sac fly brought Sanchez home. Ciriaco only needed a double for the cycle, but he was robbed of that on a diving catch by James Tomlin in the eighth inning.
Once again, the BayBears' bullpen was sharp as Jordan Norberto and Scott Maine combined for three hitless innings. Daniel Stange (S, 10) had some trouble in the ninth as Bell singled home Russ Mitchell, but Bell was picked off first to end the game after Stange stepped off towards third and caught Bell leaning too far off first.
The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They suit up for a doubleheader with the Lookouts on Wednesday night at 5:15 central time with Cody Evans (4-9, 5.49) starting game one and Kyler Newby (2-0, 2.93) taking the ball in the nightcap. The BayBears return home on Monday, July 27 to host Ryne Sandberg and the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
