AquaSox Fall Short in 8-2 Loss

The AquaSox were unable to overcome an early seven-run defecit
July 22, 2009
SPOKANE, Wash.- The Spokane Indians (12-19) jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night and never looked back as a late rally by the Everett AquaSox (20-11) was not enough. The Indians went on to win the game 8-2.

The Indians struck first off of AqauSox starter Andres Esquibel (L, 0-1) in the bottom of the second when Miguel Velazquez singled to score Aja Barto. Tommy Mendonca then came in to score on a Denny Duron ground out to make the score 2-0.

The Indians did not let up - adding three more runs in the bottom of the third on a Barto two-RBI double and a Mendonca RBI-single giving the Indians a 5-0 cushion.

Spokane added two more runs in the fifth on a Velazquez RBI-single - scoring Jared Prince - and a Joseph Bonadonna walk - scoring Barto.

Down seven runs in the top of the seventh, the AquaSox made a valiant effort to get back in the game, but their comeback attempt fell short. Juan Fuentes singled to lead off the seventh, and James Jones followed with his first professional home run - a two-run shot, making the score 7-2.

The Indians tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth on a Cody Podraza home run to put the game away for good - giving the Indians an 8-2 victory.

The AquaSox and Indians will conclude their five-game series today at 3:30 p.m. Andrew Carraway (2-0, 0.64) will get the start for Everett. Carraway will be opposed by Spokane's Matt Thompson (1-2, 5.54).
