Wings, Manship shut out PawSox

July 22, 2009

The Rochester Red Wings shut out the Pawtucket Red Sox in the first of a pair of seven-inning games Wednesday night at Frontier Field. Jeff Manship took the mound for Rochester and allowed only one hit in six innings of scoreless ball as Rochester won handedly, 5-0.

Justin Huber broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run off the scoreboard in the left field bullpen. The homer, his 14th of the year, came off a 1-0 fastball, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead.

Manship was effective early for the Wings on the mound. Pawtucket hitters were held without a hit through the first three and two-thirds innings. Manship's fastball touched the low-90's and he located his tight, late-breaking slider all over the strike zone. Pawtucket recorded their first hit with two outs in the fourth, but the 24-year old was able to escape with a flyout to the warning track in left field, preserving the 1-0 Rochester lead.

The Wings failed to capitalize on a run-scoring opportunity in the fifth. David Winfree led off the inning with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt by Trevor Plouffe moved Winfree to third. But Winfree was caught in a baserunning blunder as Matt Macri hit a tapper back to the mound while Winfree found himself stuck between third base and home plate.

Pawtucket starter Kris Johnson, who held a bloated 6.21 ERA and International League leading 10 losses, was also sharp countering Manship, holding the Red Wings to only three hits and the lone run into the sixth inning. However, the Wings added some insurance in the seventh as Johnson began to lose his command.

A leadoff walk to Drew Butera, followed by a sacrifice by Jason Pridie, gave the Wings a runner in scoring position. Rochester followed with consecutive singles by Matt Tolbert and Steve Tolleson, driving in Butera. Huber followed with a walk, and with Danny Valencia at the plate, Tolbert scored on a wild pitch. Valencia then cleared the bases with a two-run double to the power alley in left, putting Rochester up 5-0.

Rob Delaney entered in the seventh for Rochester in relief on Manship, allowing a walk and a hit, but preserving the shutout for a 5-0 victory.
