It took a while, but it was worth it

July 23, 2009

The PawSox won a hard-fought 5-3, 12 inning decision on Thursday in Rochester. The game lasted 4 hours and 10 minutes as Pawtucket salvaged the finale of the 4 game series.

Paul McAnulty singled in the top of the twelfth to make it 4-3 and Travis Denker added an insurance run for the win. It is just the third PawSox win in 17 games. Gil Velazquez homered, his second of the year to make it 2-0 in the fifth.

Leading 3-1 in the eighth, Javier Lopez surrendered a 2 run home run to pinch hitter Matt Macri. The game remained tied at 3-3 until the twelfth. The Red Wings loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Jose Vaquedano struck out Dustin Martin to end the game. Vaquedano gets his second save. Rocky Cherry (3-0) was the winner, pitching 2 scoreless innings. Lost "in the sauce" was the effort by starter Enrique Gonzalez. He gave up 2 earned runs on just 3 hits in 7 and a third innings. He fanned six.

The PawSox return to McCoy for a 4 game series that begins at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Lefty Jeremy Sowers (2-2, 2.89) pitches for Columbus. He faces Michael Bowden (3-3, 3.13).
