April 26, 2006
Brandon Chaves' walk-off single in the 11th inning sent Altoona to a 5-4 victory over visiting Portland on Tuesday.

Rafael Alvarez and Brett Roneberg began the 11th with singles off Sea Dogs reliever Kevin Frederick (1-2). Chavez broke the 4-4 tie by singling home pinch-runner Chaz Lytle.

Josh Sharpless (2-0) struck out three in two perfect innings to secure the win.

Portland (9-10) took a 4-1 lead in the top of the ninth on back-to-back homers by David Bacani and Luis Antonio Jimenez.

Altoona (14-5) set the stage for Chaves' heroics in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer by Adam Boeve and a solo shot by Roneberg off Sea Dogs reliever Edgar Martinez.

Martinez fired 8 2/3 scoreless frames over seven games before this appearance.

Portland starter Jose Vaquedano worked four hitless frames but gave up a leadoff homer to Rafael Alvarez in the fifth. The right-hander allowed just one hit and two walks in a five-inning no-decision.

The three-game series concludes at 4:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday. --Eric Justic/MLB.com
