Goldschmidt, Parra & Gonzalez all earn NL Gold Gloves
MISSOULA, MONT. - Three Missoula Osprey alums won 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards as announced by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. on Tuesday including Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (2009 - 1st GG), Diamondbacks right fielder Gerardo Parra (2006 - 2nd GG) and Colorado Rockies left fielder Carlos Gonzalez (2003 - 3rd GG). The award recognizes the best defensive players at their respective positions as voted upon by Major League Baseball managers and coaches.
Goldschmidt, 26, is the fourth D-backs player to win a Rawlings Gold Glove Award, joining outfielder Steve Finley (1999, 2000), second baseman Orlando Hudson (2006-07) and outfielder Parra (2011, '13). Goldschmidt led all NL first basemen in putouts (1,494) and total chances (1,598) while ranking second with a .997 fielding percentage, trailing only the Rockies' Todd Helton (.998).
The award capped off a busy few days for Goldschmidt, who was honored with the Hank Aaron Award over the weekend. The Hank Aaron Award is officially sanctioned by Major League Baseball and recognizes the most outstanding offensive performer in each league.
The accolades for Goldschmidt should continue to roll in as the star, who made his first All-Star game in 2013, hit .302 with 36 doubles, 36 home runs, 125 RBI, 99 walks and 103 runs scored in just his second full season with the Diamondbacks. He is the front-runner for National League MVP to be announced in the coming days.
Parra, 26, established a club record with a NL-best 17 outfield assists in 2013, and led all outfielders with 41 defensive runs saved and a 31.1 ultimate zone rating (UZR). According to fangraphs.com, the 41 DRS were the most since 2002 and the 31.1 UZR is the second-highest since 2002 behind Alfonso Soriano's 33.2 in 2007.
Parra, who won his initial Gold Glove Award as a left fielder, is the first player to win two, outfield-specific awards since Rawlings reverted back to its inaugural setup of honoring each outfield position separately.
This is Gonzalez's third Gold Glove with the Rockies winning the award prior in 2010 and 2012 with an injury plagued 2011 sandwiched in between.
