Lansing Wins Wild One in Extras
After nine innings left the game tied at 6-6, Mark Sobolewski led off the top of the tenth with a walk against Victor Capellan (LP, 0-2). Jon Talley followed with a sacrifice bunt, but Capellan's throw to first went down the line allowing Sobolewski to score and Talley to move around to third. One out later, Kenny Wilson singled against a shallow infield, plating Talley for the 8-6 lead.
It may not have ever gotten to that point had it not been for three Silver Hawks errors in the eighth inning, turning a 6-3 lead into a 6-6 tie. With two on, two out, and Daniel Vasquez (ND) pitching, Wilson reached on a fielding error from Reynaldo Navarro, scoring a run and putting runners on the corners. On the next pitch, Wilson stole second with Balbino Fuenmayor scoring from third when the throw went into center field. When Navarro backed up the play and threw back to the plate, the throw eluded catcher Rossmel Perez, allowing Wilson to circle the bases, tying the game.
South Bend threatened in the bottom of the tenth, putting two runners on with nobody out. However, Matt Daly (SV, 19) got the next three outs, leaving the tying run at second base and the winning run at the plate.
The Silver Hawks scored four early runs against Joel Carreno (ND) in the third inning, with Victor Estevez, Navarro, Perez, and Justin Parker each picking up RBI singles. Perez had a sacrifice fly in the seventh with Parker adding a RBI double to account for the Silver Hawks six runs.
Chris Emanuele helped the Lugnuts to the early lead with a RBI single in the third. Mike McDade also had a sacrifice fly in the inning, with Fuenmayor tacking on a RBI double in the fourth against South Bend starter Brett Moorhouse (ND).
Moorhouse was charged with three earned runs in 5.0 innings, while Vasquez was hit for three unearned runs in 3.0 innings, and Capellan allowed the final two unearned runs in his 2.0 innings on the mound.
In addition to Parker and Perez with multi-RBI games, Clayton Conner had two hits in his first game with South Bend this season.
