Flour Bluff Breakthrough Continues
CORPUS CHRISTI - Flour Bluff, which captured its first-ever playoff victory last April, has placed four on the 2014 South Texas Pre-Season Large School Softball All-Star Team.
Senior second baseman Calleigh Campbell and a trio of juniors - pitcher Michelle Revels, third baseman Ryley Beauregard and designated player Lauren Silver - return for coach Troy Owens, who aims to build on a 20-10 record and area round playoff appearance.
It was there the Hornets were upended by District 30-4A co-champion Gregory-Portland (30-11), one of four schools with two representatives. Senior pitcher and District 30-4A MVP Amie Cisneros and junior outfielder Kiani Ramsey, the district's top offensive player, return for coach Felicia Talamantez. G-P is loaded with experience in the wake of a run to the Region 4-4A semifinals vs. Leander.
The Lady Cats were tied for ninth in the final Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings, as was Paula Salinas' Moody club. That wasn't the only similarity; the 36-6 Trojans advanced to the regional semis as well, vs. eventual state champion Buda Hays. Junior pitcher Brittany Martinez (21-6/1.18) and classmate/battery mate Aneesa Sanchez set the tone for Salinas.
Tuloso-Midway garnered two-thirds of the outfield with senior Victoria Sale and junior Gabby Flores. They'll need to help offset the loss of four key seniors from the 24-10 area-round team eliminated by Moody. Corpus Christi ISD 5A entries Carroll and King round out the unit with three seniors, Tigers first baseman Brenda Leal-Flores and shortstop Alex Gonzalez and Mustangs pitcher Bianca Frank, who made the honor squad as a sophomore.
Revels, Cisneros, Martinez and Leal-Flores repeated from last year.
The all-stars, nominated and selected by area Class 4A and 5A coaches, will be recognized at the 10th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet January 29 at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center. The event is presented by the Corpus Christi Caller- Times and ClearChannel Media + Entertainment. Tickets are on sale at the Whataburger Field Box Office.
