DeSalvo Elected to Greenville Hall of Fame

Braves GM led the Greenville club for 18 years

PEARL, MS -- Mississippi Braves General Manager Steve DeSalvo was recently elected to the Greater Greenville (SC) Baseball Hall of Fame. DeSalvo served as General Manager of the Greenville Braves from 1987 to 2004 and oversaw the Double-A Braves official move to Mississippi in 2005.

 

"This announcement comes as a completely pleasant surprise to me," DeSalvo said. "I am truly honored to be inducted into the Greater Greenville Baseball Hall of Fame. I was there when the Hall of Fame was formed and spent 18 fantastic years with a great organization (Atlanta Braves), and a owe heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to the many fans and sponsors of the Greenville Braves."

 

The Greater Greenville Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2013 includes Nolan Ryan, DeSalvo, Craig Brown, Tommy Lasorda, Fieldin Culbreth, Elizabeth Mahon and M.V. Moss. The Class of 2013 will be inducted during an April ceremony in Greenville, S.C. At that time the Classes of 2012 and 2014 will also be inducted.

 

"I am especially honored and quite humbled to be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone be inducted at the same time, as the likes of Nolan Ryan and Tommy Lasorda, and the many other great inductees," DeSalvo continued. "I am proud to become a member of such an elite group and look forward to visiting with everyone for the induction ceremony in April."

 

A native of New York, DeSalvo is currently in his 34th professional baseball season. He's spent 33 years as a Minor League General Manager and 28 years with the Braves Double-A franchise. DeSalvo has been named Southern League Executive of the Year three times (1990, 1998 and 2007). He also received the league's Outstanding Community Service Award in 1997.

 

DeSalvo has served as Vice President of the Southern League since 2000. He is also a member of the Minor League Baseball Marketing Committee. While in Greenville, DeSalvo was named Man of the Year by the Upstate Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (2001-03) and he was awarded the Vocational Service Award by the Pleasantburg Rotary Club (2001). In 2002, he was awarded the American Medal of Honor for his community service work, a national award presented through the American Biographical Institute.

 

A "lifetime" member of the Strathmore's Who's Who for Business Professionals in the United States, DeSalvo currently sits on several community boards in the Jackson-Metro Area including The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, The Salvation Army, The Pearl Chamber of Commerce, The Pearl Kiwanis Club and The Rankin County Chamber. He was named 2010-11 Pearl Kiwanian of the Year. 
The Mississippi Braves is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since making the move from Greenville, SC, in 2005, over 80 M-Braves have gone on to play in the big leagues.
