Bisons' second inning outburst enough for win over Wings
Red Wings starter Reid Santos got into trouble early, surrendering three first inning singles, including a two-out RBI poke up the middle, giving Buffalo an early 1-0 lead.
The Wings answered right back in the bottom of the frame as Jason Pridie ripped a two-out pitch down the right field line and advanced to second on a fielding error by Buffalo's Jesus Feliciano. After Tolleson dropped down a sac bunt to advance Pridie to third, Jose Morales drilled a double down the left field line to score Pridie and knot the score up at one.
Santos' woes continued in the second. The inning began with a fielding error by the second baseman Tolleson and turned into a nightmare for Santos. The Bisons, who sent twelve men to the plate, pounded the left-hander for six hits and seven runs, in an inning where Santos hit a batter, walked another, and was pulled in favor of righty Tim Lahey with two outs and men on second and third. All seven of Buffalo's second inning runs were unearned but nonetheless gave the Herd an early 8-1 lead.
The Wings began to chip away at the 8-1 Buffalo lead in the bottom of the third. With one out Tolleson blasted a solo shot to deep left for his sixth home run of the season. Justin Huber followed in suit with a two-out blast of his own to left for his team-leading 20th long ball of the year, cutting the Buffalo lead to 8-3.
Rochester threatened again in the bottom of fifth but failed to cut into the Buffalo lead. Tolleson continued his strong night at bat with a two-out single to left and Morales followed with a single of his own, advancing Tolleson to third. With men on first and third, Huber flew out to the warning track in deep center field to effectively end the Wings threat.
The Red Wings bats began to show signs of life again in the bottom of the seventh. Brock Peterson and Dustin Martin began the inning with consecutive singles. Tolleson notched his second RBI of the game with a one out sacrifice fly to center field which scored Peterson and cut the deficit to 8-4. With two outs in the inning, Morales ripped an opposite field single to right, advancing Pridie to third. With men on first and third, Huber was robbed of another RBI after he hit a sharp line drive right to the Bisons shortstop for out number three. In the eighth, Trevor Plouffe's sacrifice fly brought in a run to make it 8-5.
In the ninth, the Wings staged one more comeback attempt. Matt Macri doubled, and Pridie drove Macri in with a double of his own to pull the Wings to within two at 8-6. That prompted a pitching change, with Tim McNab coming into the game. Morales' sac fly brought the Wings one run away, and Huber walked to bring up Danny Valencia. McNab got Valencia on a swinging strike to end the rally.
The Minnesota Twins announced after Friday's game that they have placed third baseman Joe Crede on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 22, with a lower back strain.
To replace Crede on the 25-man roster, the Twins will recall catcher Jose Morales in time for Saturday night's game vs. the Texas Rangers. Morales batted .336 (71-for-211) with 13 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 26 rbi in 58 games with the Red Wings this season. In four stints with the Twins this season, Morales batted .343 (23-for-67) with four doubles and four rbi in 29 games.

This Day in IL Baseball History: 1885 – A crucial game in the 1885 pennant chase is played in Utica, New York. That season the New York State League, which the following year changed its name to “International League”, experienced a tight three-team race for the pennant between Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica. On this Friday afternoon, the Utica Pentups earn a big victory over the Syracuse Stars in front of 550 fans at Riverside Park. The hero is pitcher John Pendergrass, who goes 3-4 with a double to compliment his superb effort on the mound. Pendergrass holds the Stars hitless for the afternoon, striking out 12 and allowing only one run in the 4th after a walk and a pair of errors. Utica wins the game 4-1 thanks to Pendergrass, who throws the second no-hitter in League history. Despite the setback, the Stars would hold off Utica and Rochester to win the 1885 pennant.
