Mookie Betts Among Top 2nd Base Prospects

January 21, 2014

In MLB.com's countdown to the Top 100 prospects, they released their Top 10 second basemen Monday afternoon.

Ranked at #3 was the Red Sox own Mookie Betts who had a sizzling 2013 season between Greenville and Salem. He combined to hit .314 (.296 in Greenville, .341 in Salem) with 15 homers, 36 doubles, 65 RBI, 93 runs scored and 38 stolen bases. He also drew 81 walks while striking out just 57 times in 462 at bats over 127 games.

While most didn't expect such a dramatic jump in his power numbers (zero in his career until last season), his speed and defense were. Betts excelled in the Arizona Fall League hitting .271 with a homer and five RBI in 16 games while stealing a team high eight bases.

Here's his scouting report from mlb.com: "One of the breakout stars of 2013, Betts was one of nine Minor Leaguers to hit at least 15 home runs and steal 30 bases. His breakout was sparked by a better approach at the plate and improved pop in his bat. While his power surge was new, his speed was not. Betts is a plus runner, which translates into good range at second base."

Got to believe he's destined for Portland for the 2014 season at the age of just 21.
