Papelbon Added to Sea Dogs Roster

Portland, Maine-The Boston Red Sox have added right-handed pitcher Joshua Papelbon to the Sea Dogs roster from Single-A Salem. Papelbon is the younger brother of current Red Sox and former Sea Dog Jonathan Papelbon (2005). He will wear uniform number 24. Sea Dogs' outfielder Matt Sheely was placed on the disabled list.

The 26 year-old, Papelbon, appeared in 34 games for the Salem Red Sox this season posting a 5-2 record with two saves and 2.87 ERA (19 ER/ 59.2 IP). He spent the 2008 season with Single-A Lancaster where he appeared in a team high 39 games notching a 4-3 record with a save and a 4.46 ERA (35 ER/ 70.2 IP). Papelbon was selected by the Red Sox in the 48th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He has a twin brother, Jeremy, who is currenly playing in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Jonathan and Joshua Papelbon are just the third set of brothers to have played with the Portland Sea Dogs and the first as a Red Sox affiliate. Previosuly the Sea Dogs had Edison Renteria in 1994 and his brother Edgar Renteria in 1995. Meanwhile the Wathan borthers are the only ones to play for the Sea Dogs together; Derek Wathan (2000-2001) was joined by his older brother Dusty Wathan in 2001.

Matt Sheely had appeared in 41 games for the Sea Dogs hitting .181 with four RBI.

The Sea Dogs begin the final homestand of the 2009 season with a 6:00 PM game Tuesday night against the Trenton Thunder (Yankees). The Sea Dogs are in town through Monday, September 1st.
