Flurry of moves affect Wings

Mulvey to Arizona; Buscher recalled by Twins
September 1, 2009
Tuesday's big league roster expansion prompted a series of moves affecting the Red Wings. The Wings' parent Minnesota Twins recalled third baseman Brian Buscher from Triple-A Rochester, activated LHP Glen Perkins from the disabled list and optioned him to Rochester, and assigned right-handed pitcher Kevin Mulvey to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a waiver claim for cash considerations.

In 23 games with the Red Wings this season, Buscher batted .179 (14-for-78) with one home run and two rbi. Buscher began the season with the Twins, batting .227 (27-for-119) with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and 11 rbi in 52 games, before being optioned to Rochester on August 1. He is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game vs. the Chicago White Sox and will wear uniform number 32

Perkins was 6-7 with a 5.89 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) for the Twins. Perkins, who was placed on the disabled list August 12 (retroactive to August 9) with left shoulder tendinitis, will be added to the roster once he reports.

Mulvey, who was the Red Wings scheduled starting pitcher tonight in Buffalo, will join Arizona for their series at Los Angeles. Mulvey was 5-8, 3.93 (149.0 ip, 65 er) with 54 walks and 113 strikeouts in 24 starts for Triple-A Rochester this season. He also made one appearance for the Twins, allowing four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. In addition, the Twins will forward cash to the Diamondbacks in lieu of the Player To Be Named Later to complete the Jon Rauch trade from August 28.

Armando Gabino will replace Mulvey on the mound tonight for Rochester, with the game shown locally on TWCS cable 26/215.

Infielder Trevor Plouffe was placed on the temporary inactive list today. Plouffe, who is joining Team USA for the World Cup Games, will finish the season batting .260 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 118 games for Rochester.

LHP Reid Santos was suspended by the International League today for 3 games for hitting Buffalo infielder Argenis Reyes in the bottom of the eighth inning last night. Santos will start his suspension tonight and won't be eligible to play until Friday, September 4.

Notes: The Red Wings were shut out on the International League's 2009 All-Star Team, announced Tuesday afternoon.
