Power set SAL home run record
Mat Gamel hit two of the Power's six homers in a 12-run first inning as West Virginia went on to break the league mark in a rain-shortened, 17-2 rout of the Lexington Legends.
Eric King's RBI double staked the Legends to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Power sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 times on 12 hits against Brian Bogusevic and reliever Brandon Stricklen.
Darren Ford led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored the tying run on Lorenzo Cain's single. Angel Salome reached on a throwing error by shortstop Thomas Manzella and Gamel followed with his third homer of the season to put West Virginia in front, 4-1.
Michael Bell doubled ahead of back-to-back home runs by Ryan Crew and Ned Yost IV. Bradley Willcutt singled to chase Bogusevic, and Nathan Yoho greeted Stricklen with the fourth homer of the inning.
Ford singled before Salome and Gamel went back-to-back with one out, tying the SAL single-game home run record set several times, most recently by the Legends on April 8, 2002.
The mark lasted until the fifth, when Bell sent a two-run shot over the left-field fence at Appalachian Power Park. Rain halted the game four batters later, but not before West Virginia totaled 23 hits.
All nine West Virginia starters drove in a run and Cain was the only one who did not get at least two hits. Ford went 4-for-4 and scored three times, while Gamel, Bell, Yost and Willcut had three hits apiece.
Bogusevic failed to retire a batter and was charged with eight runs -- seven earned -- on seven hits as his ERA climbed from 5.68 to 10.66.
