Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds, class "A" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, will play an exhibition game against Division III power Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 1 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
The Shorebirds and Sea Gulls have played an exhibition game each of the last four seasons. In 2013, the Shorebirds defeated the Sea Gulls, 3-0. The Shorebirds have won all four meetings.
"The exhibition game has become a great community event over the years," said Shorebirds general manager Chris Bitters. "We look forward to welcoming the Sea Gulls to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium and kicking off the Shorebirds' season."
The 2014 season will be the 19th in franchise history for the Shorebirds and 18th as an Orioles affiliate. Ryan Minor will lead the Shorebirds in 2014 after a one-year stint in Frederick (Advanced-A). He is 46 wins shy of becoming the winningest manager in franchise history. The Shorebirds roster is expected to be loaded with high end prospects from last years Aberdeen Ironbirds team that advanced to the postseason.
The Sea Gulls, who were ranked number 13 in the D3baseball.com preseason poll, are coming off a tremendous 2013 campaign. They went 33-9 and reached the NCAA South Regional Championship game. The Sea Gulls have reached the NCAA tournament 14 straight seasons including a world series appearance in 2011.
"We always look forward to playing the game against the Shorebirds," said 14th year Salisbury head coach Doug Fleetwood. "Our student athletes have a great time competing against professional players and it is always a fun night for our students at Salisbury University and the community."
