IronPigs Sweep Two From Herd

Savery, Lopez throw complete games for Lehigh Valley
September 4, 2009
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs got two fantastic starts out of their rotation to take a pair of games from the Bisons on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park. Both Joe Savery and Rodrigo Lopez went the distance as the I-Pigs collected victories of 4-1 and 7-2 in a doubleheader that began a five-game in four-day series with the Herd to end the season.

Savery allowed just one unearned run in his Game 1 win. Lopez allowed a pair or runs but benefitted from a 10-hit Lehigh Valley attack to earn the victory in the night cap. The two defeats drop Buffalo's record to 55-85 with only three games left in the 2009 season.

Savery allowed five hits to improve to 4-2 on the year. The only time Buffalo dented the scoreboard against the hurler came in the second inning when IronPigs' catcher Tuffy Gosewisch dropped a throw that allowed Robinson Cancel to score on Luis Rivera's single. That would be the only lead the Bisons would have in either game.

The IronPigs responded with three in the bottom of the second against Arturo Lopez in his first start as a Bison. Gosewisch and J. J. Furmaniak had RBI-hits to give the Lehigh Valley the only runs they would need to win. Andy Tracy's 26th home run of the year off Eddie Kunz in the fifth inning sealed the Game 1 victory.

In Game 2, the IronPigs scored all seven of their runs against Herd starter Chris Mason (1-1). With the game tied 1-1, Lehigh Valley scored three in the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding lead. Furmaniak drove in two more with a single in the fourth while John Mayberry Jr.'s 13th home run of the season accounted for two of the runs in the fifth.

Buffalo's runs in Game 2 came on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and a Jesus Feliciano ground out in the sixth inning. Buffalo was outhit 16-10 in the two games combined.

Feliciano did have a pair of hits on the night, going 1-3 in each game. He know has a team-best 148 hits on the season.
