Angels' Napoli catches a break
With Bengie Molina out of the picture, the Angels created a platoon of Jose Molina and rookie Jeff Mathis. Both catchers have struggled offensively, with Mathis barely breaking the century mark. His .103 batting average earned him a ticket to Triple-A with another highly-rated prospect taking his place.
That would be Mike Napoli, and the 24-year-old is making the most of his opportunity. He made his second straight start Sunday and the third behind the plate since getting recalled Thursday. Napoli has gone 3-for-8 with a double, homer and two RBIs.
Napoli has also handled the pitchers well and made a strong throw in the second inning of Saturday's 3-0 win to complete a strikeout/caught stealing double play.
"He has shown us that he is comfortable back there, and that is what we need," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He is making a quick study of what our (pitchers) are able to do."
Molina will start Monday and catch Jeff Weaver, who turned in his best performance of the season in his last outing. Scioscia reiterated the focus of the catching position is on defense and while the team has carried three catchers in the past, he is not close to adjusting the roster.
The team will opt for the best mix and that currently gives an edge to Napoli, who will be given the opportunity to play.
"We expect Jeff to be back with us at some point, as soon as he gets his feet on the ground," Scioscia said. "Right now, we need a presence behind the plate. Jose is giving us that and Mike is giving us that. I'm not thinking of it in terms as a short leash."
