Hunter Pence Nominated for Roberto Clemente Award

Former Legend Hunter Pence has been nominated by teammates for the Roberto Clemente Award
September 8, 2009
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) - Recent Lexington Legends Hall of Fame inductee and Houston Astros All-Star Hunter Pence has been nominated by his fellow Astros teammates as a candidate for Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. The Roberto Clemente Award is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field.

The former Legends star is racking up the awards this year both locally and in Houston. In July, Pence was selected to his first All-Star Game, and was one of the two representatives from the Astros that participated in the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis. On August 15, Pence was inducted into the Lexington Legends Hall of Fame, joining former Legend Ben Zobrist as the 2009 inductees.

Hunter Pence played in Lexington during the 2005 season and still holds the single-season batting average record for the Lexington Legends. An outfielder, he played in 80 games for the Legends and batted .338, he also hit 25 home runs, which was a record until last Saturday when current Legend Brian Pellegrini hit his 26 homerun of the season. Pence shared the record with Beau Hearod, who hit 25 in 2004. Pence broke into the majors with the Houston Astros on April 28, 2007 and has not looked back, excelling on the field and off.

September 2 marked the eighth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially recognize local Club recipients of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy is named for the 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The award perpetuates Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current-day players who truly understand the value of helping others.

Fans can once again participate in the selection process of the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. From September 2 through October 4, fans are encouraged to log on to http://www.chevy.com/clemente and vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. The winner of the fan poll will receive one vote among those cast by the selection panel, which includes Vera Clemente, wife of the late Hall of Famer, and Commissioner Selig. Participating fans will also be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to Game Three of the 2009 World Series, where the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy will be announced.
