New Mascot Naming Contest Announced

New duck mascot to debut at home opener on April 10

(AKRON, OHIO) March 10, 2014 - The Akron RubberDucks announced today a naming contest for the new duck mascot, which is set to be unveiled on Opening Night, April 10 at Canal Park (vs. Bowie, 6:35 p.m.). The winner will receive season tickets and a chance to participate in the unveiling ceremony.

"A mascot is an important part of a franchise's identity. We think our new mascot captures the fun fans of all ages have at Canal Park," said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander. "We think the new duck mascot will make a great addition to our family of performers which includes Orbit the space cat and Homer the inflatable polka dotted pigeon."

Starting today on www.akronrubberducks.com, a cartoon design of the new mascot will be revealed daily on a piece-by-piece basis until Friday when the entire cartoon will appear. From Mon., March 17 to Tue., March 25, fans can submit names for the new mascot by sending an email to [email protected] with the name suggestion in the subject line and his or her name, address, and phone number in the body of the message.

An online vote from among the top five names, as determined by the RubberDucks front office, will run from Thu., March 27 to Fri., April 4. The winning name will be announced Mon., April 7 and the mascot will make its official debut on Opening Night. The winner of the contest will be selected at random from those fans who submitted the winning name.

The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season will be its 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks. The team begins its season on April 3 at Binghamton and the home opener at Canal Park is scheduled for Thursday, April 10 at 6:35 p.m. against the Bowie Baysox.
