BIRTHDAYS:

James Boone ('06-'07, OF) turns 31. The native of Clinton, OK was the third round pick of Pirates in 2005 out of the University of Missouri. He battled injuries much of 2006 and had a brief tenure with Hickory in 2007 before his promotion to high-A Lynchburg. Overall in 55 games, Boone batted .262 with nine doubles, four homers and 20 RBI. He played for AA Altoona in 2008 and the first part of 2009 before he was released. Boone finished out 2009 with Sioux City in the independent American Association to end his career.

Josh Fauske ('96-'98, C-1B) turns 40. The native of Mercer Island, WA was the 26th round pick of the White Sox in 1995 out of Central Washington University. He played in a club record 317 games with Hickory over three seasons and battled .249 with 62 doubles, 39 homers and 184 RBI. Fauske owns club records in at bats (1131), hits (282), doubles, RBI, and is tied for the most walks (125). He is also second in run scored (154), and total bases (461), as well as third in homers. Fauske finished out 2003 with low-A Burlington before the White Sox released him. He then played with a variety of Northern League (ind.) teams finally ending his career with Edmonton in 2006.

Teodoro Martinez ('11, OF) turns 22. The native La Bueora, Venezuela signed with the Rangers as an international free agent in 2008. He had an injury-plagued season with Hickory, as he played in only 63 games. Martinez batted .276 with 10 doubles, two triples, three homers, 25 RBI and stole 20 bases. He played for high-A Myrtle Beach in 2012 and had an all-star season with AA Frisco in 2013.

Bob Mumma ('93-'94, C-1B) turns 43. The native of Rising Sun, MD was the 19th round pick of the White Sox in 1992 out of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. He played briefly with Hickory in each of his two seasons with the club. Mumma batted .248 with six doubles, a triple, two homers and 11 RBI. He finished out his playing career later in 1994 with low-A South Bend before his release. After a 15-year stint as an assistant coach with his alma mater, Mumma became the head coach in 2013 and is now in his second season with the school.

Jason Olsen ('96, P) turns 39. The native of Fairfield, CA was the 44th round pick of the White Sox in 1994 out of Napa Valley (CA) Community College. He made four starts with Hickory and went 2-1 with a complete game and a 1.37 ERA. In 26.1 innings, Olsen struck out 32, walked six, and allowed five runs (four earned) on 19 hits. Olsen split the rest of 1996 with low-A South Bend and high-A Prince William. He went on to AA Birmingham from 1997 to 1999 and to AAA Charlotte in 1999. After his release from the White Sox, Olsen pitched three seasons in the independent Western League at Feather River (2000) and Solano (2001-2002).

BIRTHDAYS:

Fernando Mejias ('95, P) turns 42. The native of Maracay, Venezuela signed with the White Sox in 1994 as a free agent after his release from the Phillies chain. He pitched in 30 games (16 starts) with Hickory and went 2-9 with a 4.59 ERA. In 111.2 innings, Mejias struck out 76, walked 38, and allowed 78 runs (57 earned) on 128 hits. The White Sox released him after the season and he pitched one more year in 1997 with Aberdeen (SD) of the independent Prairie League.

Juan Carlos Oviedo ('02-'04, P) turns 32. The native of Banao, D.R. signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in 2000. While pitching under the name Leo Nunez, he made one start for Hickory in 2002 (five hits and three walks over four innings), and then returned for part of 2003 and all of 2004. Overall, Oviedo made 41 appearances (28 starts) and went 12-7 with a 3.67 ERA. In 196.1 innings, Oviedo struck out 178, walked 63, and allowed 87 runs (80 earned) on 185 hits. He had three complete games in 2004. The Kansas City Royals picked him up in the Rule 5 draft and Oviedo made his major league debut with them on May 9, 2005. He bounced between the Royals and their minor league teams through 2008 before hooking up with the Marlins in 2009. He had three successful seasons with Florida, including a 30 save season in 2010. Oviedo hurt his arm in 2012 and injured it during a rehab assignment with AAA New Orleans that season. He signed with Tampa Bay in 2013 but has yet to pitch for the club.

Wardell Starling ('04, P) turns 31. The native of Missouri City, TX was the fourth round pick of the Pirates in 2002 out of Odessa College (TX). He made 26 starts for Hickory and went 11-8 with a 4.11 ERA and a complete game. In 140 innings, Starling struck out 114, walked 51, and allowed 84 runs (64 earned) on 133 hits. He pitched for high-A Lynchburg in all of 2005 and part of 2006 when he was promoted to AA Altoona. Starling stayed with the Curve through the 2007 season before he was released. After a year away, Starling played for a series of independent league teams, including Bay Area (Continental) in 2009, Edinburg (United) in 2010, El Paso (American Association) in 2011, and finally Bridgeport (Atlantic) in 2011 and for two games in 2013.

Matt Gullory ('05, P) turns 31. The native of Lake Charles, LA was the 11th round pick of the Pirates in 2004 out of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He made 22 starts for Hickory and went 4-7 with a 2.64 ERA. In 109 innings, he struck out 82, walked 31, and allowed 44 runs (32 earned) on 106 hits. Guillory pitched one more season at high-A Lynchburg before he was released.

Brett Holmes ('05, C) turns 33. The native of Springfield, MO was the Pirates 20th round pick in 2003 out of the University of Auburn-Montgomery. He played in nine games and batted .343 (9-for-35) with a double, two homers and three RBI. Holmes was released after the season.

BIRTHDAYS:

Dave Williams ('99-'00, P) turns 35. The native of Camden, DE was the 17th round pick of the Pirates in 1998 out of Delaware Tech. Williams made nine starts for Hickory in 1999 and then 24 in 2000. Overall, Williams went 14-10 in 33 starts with a 3.03 ERA. In 229 innings, he struck out a club record 239, walked 50, and allowed 88 runs (77 earned) on 187 hits. He also had a shutout in both seasons he pitched for Hickory. Williams holds the single-season team record with 193 strikeouts and his ratio of 10.22 Ks per nine innings is also a club record. He finished up 2000 at high-A Lynchburg and had brief stints in 2001 between AA Altoona and AAA Nashville. But he spent much of 2001 with Pittsburgh, as he debuted with the Pirates on June 6, 2001. Williams was hurt in 2002 and spent all of 2003 at Nashville before he returned to Pittsburgh in 2004 and 2005. He was traded to Cincinnati for 1B Sean Casey and he pitched for the Reds early in 2006 until they traded him to the Mets for Robert Manuel. He remained with the Mets through 2007 both at the major league level and at AAA. Williams pitched in Japan for Yokohama in 2008 and returned to affiliated baseball in 2009 with the Nationals at AA Harrisburg and AAA Syracuse. After taking 2010 off, his final season came with Long Island of the independent Atlantic League. He spent the last two seasons as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays.

Ryan Rua ('13, 2B) turns 24. The native of Amherst, OH was the 17th round pick of the Rangers in 2012 out of Lake Erie College (OH). In 104 games with Hickory, Rua batted .251 with 24 doubles, a triple, 29 homers and 82 RBI. He also had 13 steals and scored 70 runs. The SAL all-star finished his Crawdads career tied for the third most homers in a season and seventh overall, and also put up a .559 slugging pct., which is the seventh best in team history.
