Flores, Osorio Pace Veracruz
CORPUS CHRISTI - Manuel Flores survived a rocky start to go five innings and Enrique Osorio drove in three runs as Club de Beisbol Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz defeated Club de Baseball Tigres de Quintana Roo 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field.
The Mexican League exhibition, played for an hour under a light drizzle, was called after seven innings at the 2-hour, 10-minute mark.
Jerry Owens' lead-off single was followed by an opposite-field homer into the right-field bullpen from Carlos Gastelum as Quintana Roo struck first. Flores then settled in, retiring 15 of the next 17 Tigers. Left fielder Eliezer Ortiz dropped a fly ball with two away in the first and Albino Contreras coaxed a fourth-inning walk.
Flores, who recorded two looking strikeouts, turned the game over to Tomas Solis. The left-hander retired six of the seven men he faced, fanning two.
Humberto Castro's one-out double to right in the third and an Osorio single the other way halved the Tiger advantage. Enrique Lechuga and Edwin Wilson were victims of Veracruz's five-run, four-hit outburst the next inning. Castro's second double plated Humberto Sosa, who reached on a fielder's choice RBI. Ortiz and Osorio contributed RBIs on a single and sacrifice fly, respectively; Ortiz crossed on a passed ball charged to Iker Franco.
Castro (sacrifice fly) and Osorio (RBI double) were at in again during the sixth, driving home Sharnol Adriana and Sosa, who greeted reliever Arturo Barradas with an opening walk and base hit.
