Kalish Named Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year

Portland, Maine- The Boston Red Sox have announced the recipients of the 2009 Minor League Player of the Awards.  Portland Sea Dogs' outfielder Ryan Kalish has been named the Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year.  Other award winners include:

  • Baserunner of the Year- Derrik Gibson (Lowell)
  • Defender of the Year- Ryan Dent (Greenville/ Salem)
  • Player of the Year- Ryan Kalish (Salem/ Portland)
  • Pitcher of the Year- Casey Kelly (GCL Red Sox/ Greenville)
  • LA Player of the Year- Keury DeLaCruz
  • LA Pitcher of the Year- Juan Rodriguez

Kalish, 21, combined to hit .329 (141-for-506) with 18 home runs, 77 RBI, 84 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2009.  Kalish began the year at Single-A Salem, after hitting .304 (35-for-115) in with 5 home runs and 21 RBI in 32 games, he was promoted to Double-A Portland on May 15th.  Kalish got off to a slow start in his Double-A career.  However, he hit .305 after June 1st and finished the season with a .271 average (106-for-391) with 13 home runs and 56 RBI in 103 games for the Sea Dogs.

His 18 total home runs ranked second among Red Sox minor leaguers.  He also ranked fourth in RBI (77), and was tied for fifth amongst Red Sox farm hands with 21 stolen bases.  The Shrewsbury, New Jersey resident was selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.  Entering the 2009 season, he was rated by Baseball America as the 13th best prospect in the Red Sox organization.
