Former CT Tiger Set To Make Major League Debut
NORWICH, CT - Tyler Collins, a member of the 2011 Connecticut Tigers, is set to make his debut in a Major League uniform as the Detroit Tigers open up the 2014 season on Monday March 31st against the Kansas City Royals. In doing so, Collins becomes the first former Connecticut Tigers position player to reach the Major League level since the team's arrival in Norwich in 2010.
The 23-year-old Collins won a spot on the Tigers Opening Day roster by putting together his second consecutive strong spring training with the club. In 23 games Collins had 3 home runs and 8 runs batted in.
A native of Lubbock, Texas, Collins was selected by Detroit in the 6th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft out of Howard College in Texas. Entering the 2013 season he was ranked the Tigers Number 6 "Top Prospect" by MLB.com.
Collins played 42 games for the Connecticut Tigers in 2011. He hit .313 and amassed 51 hits, 8 home runs, and 31 runs batted in. He has since spent the 2012 season with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (Class A-Advanced) and the 2013 season with the Erie SeaWolves (Class AA).
The first player to have played for the Connecticut Tigers and later reach the Major League level was relief pitcher Robbie Weinhardt, who pitched in three games for Connecticut while on a rehab assignment from the Toledo Mud Hens (Class AAA) in 2010. Weinhardt reached the Major Leagues for the first time later that year and pitched for the Detroit Tigers during parts of the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and begin the 2014 home schedule on Wednesday June 18th at 7:05 p.m. against the Lowell Spinners (Red Sox affiliate) with fireworks after the game! 2014 season tickets, mini plans, and team merchandise are now on sale! The front office and box office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be accessed in person or by calling 860-887-7962.
