Kernels release 2014 Opening Day Roster
Cedar Rapids, IA - The 2014 Cedar Rapids Kernels will arrive in Cedar Rapids on Monday, March 31st! The 25-player roster features three of the Twins Top 30 Prospects, according to Baseball America, including the Twins 2013 first round selection, RHP Kohl Stewart.
In addition to Stewart as the Twins #4 Top Prospect, according to Baseball America, the roster includes RHP Felix Jorge (#17) and LHP Randy Rosario (#26).
The Kernels' pitching staff features six that spent either all or part of the 2013 season with the Kernels (Brandon Bixler, Hudson Boyd, Josue Montanez, Alex Muren, Christian Powell and Miguel Sulbaran) and a strong core from Elizabethton including RHP Ryan Eades (2nd Rd - 2013) and RHP Aaron Slegers (5th Rd - 2013). Elizabethton led the Appalachian League with a team ERA of 3.10 including eight shutouts and 626 strikeouts in 598.2 IP.
Four position players return to the Kernels for the 2014 season including catchers Bo Altobelli and Michael Quesada, infielder Joel Licon and outfielder Jeremias Pineda. Former C.R. Washington prep Chad Christensen joins the Kernels outfield this season. Infielder Bryan Haar led the Appalachian League with 25 extra base hits at Elizabethton and outfielder Zach Granite was second in the league with 69 hits.
The first opportunity to meet the 2014 Kernels is on Tuesday, April 1st as part of 'Meet the Kernels Night'. The event is FREE to the public at Perfect Game Field with the gates opening at 5:00 pm. Food and beverage is available for purchase and fans can visit with the players on the main concourse from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. The team will hold an open practice under the lights from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
The Kernels open the 2014 MWL season on Thursday, April 3rd at 6:35 pm against the Clinton LumberKings with the gates opening at 4:30 pm. Tickets are on sale on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at (319) 896-7560. Ticket Office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
