First Look: Breaking down WV roster

Seven top prospects headline Power Opening Day roster
April 2, 2014

The 2014 season marks ten years of West Virginia Power baseball at Appalachian Power Park. With some returning talent and new faces, this year's ball club will bring plenty of excitement to Charleston.

The Power are coming off an impressive campaign in 2013, a year that saw West Virginia hold the best record in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League with an 82-58 record.

Power manager Michael Ryan returns for his second season at the helm. Ryan played in 1,345 games in the minor leagues and 149 in the Majors with the Twins, Braves, Pirates, Marlins and Angels. Back for 2014 is pitching coach Jeff Johnson, who is in his seventh year in the Pirates organization. Newcomers to the coaching staff include hitting coach Keoni de Renne, who served last year as a player/coach with the Pirates' Dominican Summer League Team, and player/coach Miguel Perez, who has played in over 600 games in his career after being drafted by Cincinnati in 200.

The Power feature seven of Pittsburgh's top prospects according to Baseball America in an organization that was named tops in the minor league ranks. Let's take a look at the Power positional breakdown for 2014:

Catcher: Reese McGuire - McGuire was the 1st round pick of the Pirates and 14th overall in the 2013 draft and is ranked as the 8th best prospect in the organization and the best defensive catcher in the system. Espinal was ranked as the "Best Infield Arm" in the system before the season.

Jones was productive in 15 games, hitting .311 with two doubles, two triples, a homer and 10 RBI with three stolen bases.
