Arrieta Expected To Make Rehab Start
Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is expected to begin his Major League Rehab Assignment with the Smokies and start tonight's contest against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
The 28-year-old owns a 24-27 Major League record and 5.23 ERA (238 ER in 409.2 IP) in 78 games (72 starts) between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs. Selected by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB Draft out of Texas Christian University, the Texas native was acquired by the Cubs, along with right-hander Pedro Strop and two international signing bonus slots in a July 2, 2013 trade that sent right-hander Scott Feldman and former Tennessee Smokies catcher Steve Clevenger to Baltimore.
Arrieta made nine starts for the Cubs following the deal, compiling a 4-2 mark and 3.66 ERA (21 ER in 51.2 IP), and earned victories in each of his final two outings of the year. In his four seasons with the Orioles, the right-hander accumulated a 20-25 clip and 5.46 ERA (217 ER in 358.0 IP). The Texas native was Baltimore's 2012 Opening Day starter on April 6, and became the first pitcher in club history to throw seven shutout innings while allowing two or fewer hits on Opening Day in his outing against the Minnesota Twins.
Tennessee will look to take a 2-1 series lead over the Blue Wahoos following their 1-0 victory last night, their first of the 2014 campaign. Starter C.J. Edwards (4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 SO), along with relievers P.J. Francescon (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Armando Rivero (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 SO) combined to shut out Pensacola, while the Smokies got all the offense they would need from infielder Kris Bryant. The 22-year-old Bryant blasted a solo shot to left in the seventh, his second longball of the season, to break the scoreless draw and push Tennessee to victory.
Slated to face off against Arrieta tonight is Pensacola right-hander Robert Stephenson, who is rated the top Reds prospect by Baseball America, in addition to the 19th-best overall prospect. The California native ended his 2013 season with the Blue Wahoos, compiling an 0-2 record and 4.86 ERA (9 ER in 16.2 IP) in four starts.
Fans can catch tonight's broadcast on the Smokies Radio Network, with the "Voice of the Smokies" Mick Gillispie entering his eighth season as Tennessee's Director of Broadcasting. Gillispie is assisted by Greg Young and Keith Brake. Young and Brake will host the Pilot/Oscar Meyer Pre-Game Show, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. ET.
