Salt Lake Bees Outlast Fresno Grizzlies
After a delay, the Monday night game between the Salt Lake Bee and the Fresno Grizzlies kicked off at 7:45 p.m. at Smith's Ballpark. The Bees took advantage of the late night, overtaking the Grizzlies 5-4. Salt Lake starter Justin Thomas (1-0) collected the win with seven strikeouts and three earned runs over five innings, while Chris Heston was handed the loss (0-1).
Thomas started slow, giving up three runs in the first three innings, including two solo home runs to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 edge. The Bees put their first strike on the board in the bottom of the third, before taking the lead with a four-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Brennen Boesch that boosted them to a 5-3 advantage.
Jeremy Berg and Brandon Lyon each chipped in a scoreless inning in relief for Salt Lake before Cory Rasmus loaded the bases with no one out in the eighth. A sacrifice fly from Darrin Ford brought the Grizzlies within one, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Rasmus got out of the inning without further damage by forcing Gary Brown to hit into a double play. Josh Wall gave up a lead-off triple in the ninth, but pitched out of trouble to earn the first save of the year for Salt Lake. Brennan Boesch went 2-3 on the night with two RBIs, while J.B. Shuck and Efren Navarro each recorded 2-4 at the plate. C.J. Cron earned an RBI with his fourth double of the season.
"It was a tough mental day with all the sitting around and waiting, but I thought our guys did a great job of finishing the game tonight," said Salt Lake head coach Keith Johnson.
