Padres add Thompson, option Meredith

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of Portland right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson and optioned right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith (pronounced "Clay") to the Beavers.

Thompson, 25, is 5-0 with a 3.70 ERA (17er, 41.1ip) in eight starts with the Beavers this season.

Over eight minor league seasons in the Padres organization (1999-2006), Thompson has a 54-47 record with a 4.52 ERA in 177 career appearances (144 starts). Thompson, who has yet to pitch in the major leagues, joined the Padres as a fifth-round draft choice in the 1999 draft.

In parts of two seasons with the Beavers, Thompson is 9-2 with a 3.36 ERA (38er, 101.1ip) in 17 appearances (all starts).

Meredith, 22, was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0er, 1.0ip) in one game for the Padres after being recalled from Portland on May 3. Over parts of two major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox (2005) and Padres (2006), Meredith has a career record of 1-0 with an 18.90 ERA (7er, 3.1ip) in four games, all in relief.

With the Beavers this season, Meredith, who was acquired in a trade with Boston on May 1, is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA (2er, 5.0ip) and one save in four relief appearances.
