Sox outlast Wings 9-5

April 14, 2014

Alex Hassan had two hits and two RBI, helping the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 9-5 win over the Red Wings Monday night on a soggy Frontier Field. Danny Santana had three hits for Rochester, including triples in his first two at-bats.

The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday; fans can take advantage of the 4-Pack with four tickets, hot dogs, soft drinks and a yearbook for $36 at every Tuesday and Thursday home game.

The pitching match up featured two right-handed prospects, Pawtucket's Anthony Ranaudo and Trevor May of the Wings. May, making his second start of the season, struck out a pair in a perfect first inning.

Red Wings shortstop Santana opened the bottom half of the first by lofting a 3-2 pitch from Ranaudo over the head of center fielder Justin Henry for a triple. James Beresford's opposite field single brought home Santana for an early 1-0 lead.

The PawSox came right back to take the lead in the top of the second inning, on a pair of two-out RBI singles by Christian Vasquez and Mike McCoy.

Rochester's offense jumped on Ranaudo in the bottom of the second. Eduardo Nunez doubled, and moved to third on an infield single by Eric Farris. Eric Fryer's broken bat single scored Nunez to tie the game, and a sacrifice fly by Chris Rahl brought home Farris to put the Wings back on top 3-2. Santana tripled again to score Fryer, making it 4-2 Wings.

As steady rain began to fall, the PawSox narrowed the gap in the top of the third. Ryan Lavarnway drove home Henry with an RBI single, and the PawSox had a pair of base runners with one out. But a slick fielding play by Santana started a double play to end the scoring threat and keep the score 4-3 Red Wings.

The rain continued through a scoreless fourth inning, with the grounds crew called out a couple of times to work on the infield and mound.

The PawSox took a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning, using four hits, a walk and an error. Pawtucket scored three runs off left-hander Brooks Raley, who replaced May with one out in the fifth inning. May threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits and two walks, striking out four.

The Red Wings got a run back in their half of the fifth, on a fielder's choice RBI by Farris.

Ranaudo worked five innings for Pawtucket, giving up eight hits and five earned runs, walking three and striking out five.

Pawtucket added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with one run coming on a solo home run from Bryce Brentz off Edgar Ibarra.

Ibarra was roughed up over his 1 1/3 innings pitched, yielding three hits and two walks A.J. Achter inherited a bases loaded situation from Ibarra in the seventh, getting a fly out from Hassan to escape more trouble.

Pawtucket added a run off Achter in the eighth. With steady rain starting up again and the infield becoming more slippery, the umpires called for the tarp after the Wings batted in the eighth inning. After waiting 49 minutes and then checking the infield, the umpires ruled the game complete after eight innings.

This Day in Red Wings History
1998
- Rochester second baseman Pete Stanicek hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to lift the Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies in Maine. The win was Rochester's sixth in their first seven games.

This Day in IL Baseball History
1982 - Toledo visits the Charleston Charlies in an early-season matchup when a 186-pound utility man, hardly known for his power, hits a ball that travels farther than any other in League history. Randy Bush blasts a home run over the right field wall which lands on a moving coal train. The ball, resting on the back of the train, travels over 200 miles from Charleston before finally coming to a rest. Needless to say, no other International League player has ever hit a ball that traveled close to 200
miles. Later that season Bush would make his Major League debut for the Minnesota Twins, with whom he played in over 1,200 games during a 12-year career. He hit 96 home runs as a big leaguer.
