Rincon and Sullivan Named Top NWL Prospects

Baseball America Tabs Rincon #2 Overall Prospect, Sullivan #17
September 30, 2009
Trade publication Baseball America has released its annual Northwest League top prospects list which this year includes two Emeralds, 3B Edinson Rincon and RHP Jerry Sullivan.

Rincon was named the circuits #2 overall prospect behind only SS Hak-Ju Lee of the Boise Hawks (Chicago-NL). The Eugene third baseman was a terror at the plate hitting .300 with seven home runs along with 47 runs batted in over 70 games. In 267 at-bats Rincon added 18 doubles, three triples and scored 47 runs. He finished in the top five in the NWL in four offensive categories including RBI (4th) and runs scored (4th) as well as on-base percentage (5th, .415) and extra-base hits (3rd, 28).

His defense was a problem however as he made 22 errors to lead the team. His fielding percentage of .818 was the worst in the NWL among third basemen with ten or more games at the position. Only Joseph Sanders of Tri-City made more errors at the hot corner with 24. Sanders, however, had 64 more total chances.

Sullivan, the Padres 3rd Round selection in the 2009 First Year Player Draft out of Oral Roberts University, was named the loop's #17 overall prospect by Baseball America. Sullivan led the club in wins (5) and strikeouts (58). For the campaign, Sullivan was 5-3 with a 4.02 earned run average in 16 games including nine starts. In 53.2 innings pitched, Sullivan fanned 58 against 27 walks. He also posted a fine 1.23 WHIP.
